Summary: We strive to enlighten, empower and support women with disabilities of all colors, creeds, and sexual preferences by providing alternative resources both on- and off-line.
Project Description: Our main services are discussion lists. Right now, we host four of them: Girlies (ages 15-25), QueerGirlies (ages 15-25), QueerLadies (all ages), and BohemiGimps (arts discussion, ages 15-25). We also offer collections of links, referrals to other on-line resources, a newsletter (available in alternate formats) and disability culture mini-surveys. We also have many other up-and-coming services, such as a pen pal program with women in nursing homes.
Empowerment of disabled women and girls: GGC was formed by and is still run by young women with disabilities who saw a gap in the resources for young women transitioning to adulthood. We struggle to keep a community "feel" to all of our lists to encourage women of all ages to support each other in all aspects of life. We also struggle to keep all the information we have accessible to everyone, despite their disability. We firmly believe that access to information is empowering.
Annual budget: $ 500 - 999
Project duration: Since February 1998
Main funding challenge: Involvement. It's difficult to find people to get involved in and who have knowledge of how to raise money. Another major problem is finding funders who want to fund a project that does not serve a specific location. Many projects that serve the on-line community are not meant to serve one physical location.
